(Tom Vanopphem)

1990年、ベルギーの首都ブリュッセル生まれ。

8歳のとき、日本の人気ゲーム『ゼルダの伝説 時のオカリナ』を通してオカリナという楽器を知る。長い間、ゲーム内だけの架空の楽器だと思っていたが、実際に存在することを知り大きな衝撃を受けた。

2004年、初めて自分のオカリナを手に入れる。インターネットで複数管オカリナの演奏を見て感動し、自分でも演奏したいという思いが芽生える。2009年、19歳のときに本格的に複数管オカリナの演奏を始め、音楽経験ゼロから独学で技術と音楽理論を身につけるために努力を重ねた。

その後、イタリア、オーストリア、ギリシャ、中国、台湾など世界各地で演奏を行い、高い評価を得る。神戸でのコンサート出演をきっかけに初来日。日本の文化や景色、人々の温かさに魅了され、当初短期間の滞在予定だったが、日本への永住を決意する。

2018年夏、初の自主制作アルバム 『On My Way』 をリリース。
そして2021年9月22日、ユニバーサルミュージック より、日本の人気バンド DREAMS COME TRUE の名曲をオカリナでカバーした公式アルバム 『Bittersweet』 でメジャーデビューを果たす。

また、TikTokではフォロワー数が60万人を超え、SNSを通じて世界中にオカリナの魅力を発信している。

2025年には、大阪・関西万博（Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai）に複数日出演することが決定。さらに、2025年9月14日のベルギー国王の日（ベルギー国民の日）において、開会式および国旗掲揚セレモニーで日本国歌とベルギー国歌を演奏する栄誉を受けている。

日本滞在中には、トリプルオカリナの発明者である波多野杜邦（はたの・とうほう）氏に直接師事し、オカリナ製作技術を学ぶ。現在は、自身のブランド 「Anemoi Ocarina（アネモイ・オカリナ）」 を立ち上げ、手作りのオカリナを製作・販売している。

Born in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, in 1990.

At the age of eight, Tom discovered the ocarina through the Japanese video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For many years, he believed the ocarina was a fictional instrument from the game—until he was surprised to learn that it truly existed.

In 2004, he acquired his first ocarina. After watching performances of multi-chamber ocarinas online, he became fascinated by the instrument and decided to learn it himself. In 2009, at the age of 19, he began studying the multi-chamber ocarina in earnest. Despite having no prior musical background, he dedicated himself to developing his technique and musical knowledge through intense self-practice.

Tom has since performed around the world, including in Italy, Austria, Greece, China, and Taiwan, earning recognition and praise for his expressive performances. His dream of visiting Japan came true when he performed in a concert in Kobe. Deeply moved by the culture, landscapes, and kindness of the people, he decided to make Japan his home after what was originally planned as a short stay.

In the summer of 2018, Tom released his first independent album, On My Way.
On September 22, 2021, he made his major debut with Universal Music, releasing Bittersweet — an official ocarina cover album of songs by the legendary Japanese band DREAMS COME TRUE.

Tom has appeared on numerous popular Japanese TV programs, introducing the triple ocarina to a wider audience.
Some of his notable appearances include:

  • “Itte Q! To the Ends of the Earth” (January 14, 2024) — taught ocarina to famous comedians and talents

  • “YOU wa Nani Shi ni Nippon e?” (2017 and June 10, 2024) — featured for his ocarina activities in Japan

Tom is also active on social media, particularly TikTok, where he has gained over 600,000 followers with his engaging ocarina performances and musical content.

In 2025, Tom was invited to perform at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, appearing across multiple days. He was also invited to perform on Belgium National Day, on September 14, 2025, where he will perform both the Japanese and Belgian national anthems for the opening ceremony and flag raising.

During his years in Japan, Tom had the rare opportunity to study directly under Hatano Toho (波多野杜邦), the inventor of the triple ocarina. Under his guidance, Tom learned the art of ocarina making and now handcrafts his own instruments, which he sells under his original brand, Anemoi Ocarina.
